Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is considered to be the best nutritional oil for health because its perfect (3:1) ratio of essential fatty acid (EFA) profile is closest to that required by the human body. Hemp seed oil is also naturally rich in gamma-linoleic acid (GLA). It has a pleasant nutty taste and makes an excellent addition to salads, soups, sauces and cereals.

Hemp is the only edible seed containing GLA, which makes it suitable for PMS conditions and fatty acid profile of hemp seeds makes them more suitable for a long term intake than other sources of GLA, such as Evening Primrose Oil. This is because hemp seed oil also contains linoleic acid (omega-6), alpha-linoleic acid (omega-3), stearidonic acid (also omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega 9). GLA helps to balance hormones, keep skin healthy, promotes healthy circulation, nerve function and immune system. The magnesium rich chlorophyll contained in hemp seed oil is also beneficial for PMS conditions as magnesium is a natural antispasmodic and helps to alleviate menstrual cramps.

Medical researchers at the University of Kuopio, Finland, have found evidence of the positive effects of hemp seed oil on eczema. Results showed a remarkable reduction in dryness, inching and an overall improvement in the symptoms while they were using hemp seed oil.

The ideal ratio of essential fatty acids found in hemp seed oil helps to stimulate the optimum formation of hair, skin and nails – all being derived from the same stem cell line.

Alpha-linoleic acid (omega 3) converts to EPA and DHA and is important for healthy heart, arteries, brain and flexible joints. Omega 9 (Oleic acid) also supports cardiovascular system and may be necessary for healthy immune system functioning. Hemp seed oil is also low in saturated fatty acids and contains no cholesterol.

Choosing the right oil.

Hemp seed oil must be cold pressed and should not be heated. It should be room temperature stable, so there’s no need to refrigerate it.
However, it is best to keep it in freezer after opening. Unlike other highly unsaturated oils, hemp seed oil have a long shelf life and does not become rancid soon after opening. It can be stored in the freezer for a long time and won’t freeze, so no need to defrost it.

Always try to buy oils in glass bottles. If it is in a plastic bottle, it should be PET grade 1 (you can see it in the triangle at the bottom of the bottle) and the bottle must be opaque, so that light can not penetrate it and damage the oil. Always buy organic oils if you are buying from supermarket. As a supplement from health food stores, it would be organic anyway. Hemp seed oil should be medium to pale green colour.

Suggested intake.

1-3 teaspoons (5-15 ml) a day should be enough for adults and children over three years old. 1 teaspoon (5 ml) a day can be given to children over six months old.

There are no side effects to hemp seed oil, but it is best not to take more than recommended dose. Just as any other oil, it is high in calories and might cause laxative effect if taken too much of.

And NO – hemp seed oil does NOT make you high.
